Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. While a small infant, Ford struggled with anxious disorders, obsessive/compulsive and was afflicted through word-related associations. Ford became interested in acting during her teens, she joined the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford then applied for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford didn't graduate in 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first appearance on TV on the show Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in 1991and appeared in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Alongside her usual performances in the theatre, Tate also joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in 1996.
